Services Provided: Mechanical, Structural

Schmidt Consulting Group Group provided structural and mechanical design services for a new rotary-wing aircraft operation maintenance hangar and parking apron for the 160th Special Operations Aviation Training Battalion (SOATB). The purpose of the 100,000 SF, four module hangar is to facilitate maintenance and repair to rotary-wing aircraft. The facility includes parts and tool storage rooms as well as space for administrative operations, aviation operations and all support equipment and facilities. The project also includes multiple training classrooms for MH-47, MH-60 and MH-6 aircraft.

MECHANICAL

The Mechanical design effort utilized BIM technology for developing the mechanical systems design and layouts for this project.  Life Cycle Cost Analyses, energy analyses, project specifications and other project design documentation were prepared.  Sustainable design documentation and analyses for review by Louisville District engineering review personnel in lieu of a formal LEED certification effort were developed.  Construction phase services including shop drawing reviews. Test and Balance Reports were evaluated. The Mechanical design includes building cooling provided by a high efficiency ground source geothermal heat pump system.  For enhanced energy savings, energy recovery systems pre-condition the outside air prior to delivery to the outside air units.  The building’s air distribution system is designed to meet NFPA 90A and ASHRAE compliance standards as a fully ducted HVAC system.  All mechanical equipment is controlled by a Direct Digital Control (DDC) system.

STRUCTURAL

The structural responsibilities included supervision of the the structural design, coordination production, and delivery of construction documents.
