Schmidt Consulting Group, Inc. provided services for the new Maneuver Battle Lab at Fort Benning. The lab is a constructive environment simulation facility featuring a state-of-the-art, 200-person classroom and multiple large and small simulation bays that can be networked and reconfigured. This facility was designed to meet Antiterrorism / Force Protection needs. This project has been awarded LEED Gold Certification.

MECHANICAL

Mechanical designs for the facility include HVAC with explosion-proof components of the ventilation system and DDC System for building temperature control. Designs for the fire protection system include dampers, automatic suppression systems, standpipe systems and a complete fire sprinkler system for the entire facility.

ELECTRICAL

Electrical design includes a complete electrical distribution system.  This distribution system consists of a main distribution switchboard, distribution panels, panelboards, distribution conduits and conductors.  Additional designs include Transient voltage surge suppressors, step down transformers for low voltage load applications, an emergency power system supplied by an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) System, and a Lightning Protection System to meet NRPA 780 installation codes and NFPA 70 National Electrical code for grounding requirements. Offices will have low glare/low brightness VDT grade parabolic fixtures, Simulation bays and training areas with dimmable to 5% full illumination lighting systems for presentations.

STRUCTURAL

Structural designs included steel joist on joists girders; a seismic force resisting system composed of steel concentrically braced frames; foundations composed of spread footings, and simulation bays with recessed access floors and folding partitions which are hung from the building’s roof structure.

COMMUNICATIONS/AUDIO VISUAL/ SECURITY

Communications designs included secure data and video-teleconferencing networks to classified areas; non-secure voice, data, and video-conferencing networks and SIPRNET to unclassified areas; and sound reinforcement, motorized projection screens and power and communications provisions for overhead projectors in simulation bays.
