Schmidt Consulting Group provided electrical, communication, and structural design services for the repair and alteration of Operations Group Facility 667 at Grissom Air Reserve Base.  The project included a site investigation/survey and design charrette, organization space and office space utilization studies and development of design documents.  The project was required to meet LEED Silver standards.

The project was needed to consolidate three facilities (Buildings 663, 667, and 668) totaling 49,514 square feet used by the 434th Operations Group, 72nd Squadron Operations, 74th Squadron Operations, and 434th Operations Support Squadrons.  The facilities were designed in the 1950s and required redesign to function as a campus.  The facilities also had maintenance issues and needed to be brought up to current code.  Functional spaces include areas for the commander and staff, crew training records, aircrew flight equipment system maintenance, and storage/issue of flying clothing and equipment.  Space for flight operations, intelligence, mission planning, computers, radar, and electronic countermeasures was also provided.

ELECTRICAL

Electrical design included a new distribution system throughout the building with 208Y/120V, three phase 4 wire electrical service and a diesel generator with a sub-base fuel tank sized for 72 hours run time at 75% load.  New LED lighting, receptacles, lighting controls, and occupancy sensors were provided.  Power was also provided for access control, CCTV, intrusion detection and HVAC equipment.

STRUCTURAL

The structural scope included the evaluation of the building to ensure the ATFP requirements of UFC 4-010-01 were met.  Windows and doors were enhanced and the supporting structural elements were strengthened.  The main entry was reworked and extended on a concrete foundation and slab on grade.  Wind and snow loads, as well as seismic conditions, were considered.

COMMUNICATIONS/AUDIO VISUAL/ SECURITY

The communications design provided a complete distribution system, fed from a new telecommunications room.  The new system is in accordance with UFC 3-580-01, ETL 02-12 and other national standards. Secure communications infrastructure for SIPRnet data was provided and various locations in the building have data connections for TACLAN devices.  A cable television system and audio-visual infrastructure were provided.  Security design included access control and intrusion detection systems as well as closed circuit television.
