Spring Hill College, located in Mobile, Alabama is a Jesuit School that was founded in 1830. The campus contains a number of historical buildings and St. Joseph Chapel is perhaps one of the most recognizable. Built in the Collegiate Gothic Style, the chapel is over 100 years old and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

To restore the majesty of the building, a 4.2 million dollar restoration was performed that consisted of the restoration of the original altar/tabernacle and the Sacristy and Stations of the Cross, as well as, the addition of a new baptismal font, altar.

This restoration required the total replacement of the lighting, power, HVAC, and plumbing systems. Schmidt Consulting Group, Inc. provided Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing design for the project.

The new HVAC system replaced a thirty year-old system that used console fan-coil units. The old fan-coil units created so much noise that they had to be shut off during services. The new system uses custom air handling units located in the basement with the air distribution system in the crawl space. Supply air is delivered through floor grilles located under the windows around the perimeter of the sanctuary, with return grilles located under the pews.

A new lighting system was provided to complement the existing architecture of the church. The lighting consisted of uplighting and downlights for general illumination. Small floodlighting fixtures were provided to highlight the Stations of the Cross. A new programmable dimming system was provided to control all of the lighting. The dimming system included a new dimmer rack and several lighting control stations. A new fire alarm system was also provided to meet current codes.
