Located on a 648-acre tract along St. Andrew Bay in Panama City, Florida, and with direct, deep-water access to the Gulf of Mexico, the Coastal Systems Station (CSS) is the Navy’s premier organization responsible for cradle-to-grave support for mission areas within the coastal environment, including Mine Warfare, Amphibious Warfare, Special Warfare, and Diving Systems. CSS is ideally positioned–both geographically and in terms of recognized mission areas and technical expertise–to be a key participant in the arena of joint expeditionary operations in the littoral environment.

Schmidt Consulting Group, Inc. provided Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical, Communications, and Structural design services for the new Special Operations Facility, located at Coastal Systems Station. The $8,498,000 project provided a facility to be used for the design, fabrication, and testing of prototype Navy Seal Delivery Vehicles and experimental craft. The 39,250 square foot main facility includes administration space, a dive locker, SCUBA maintenance, wet work up SCIF, highbay shops with bridge cranes, mockup labs, and building services on the first floor, while the second floor includes administration; open and closed office spaces for research and development, SCIF space, and building services. A detached 2,500 square foot, two-story boathouse was also included in this project.

The Bay County Chamber of Commerce’s Ambassador Committee chose the design team for the Special Operations Facility as the 2007 recipient of the Apple of Our Eye Award. This award is given to businesses that have made their community more visually appealing through a new construction or renovation project.
