The Frederic G. Levin Law School at the University of Florida's Gainesville campus is one of the nation's most comprehensive public law schools. Founded in 1909, the Alumni of the college are leaders in law, business, government, public service and education at the state and national level.

Schmidt Consulting Group, Inc. provided Communications, Audio-Visual, Teleconferencing, Distance Learning, Security, and Electrical design services for the University's College of Law. This project partially demolished, infilled, and renovated the first two floors of Holland Hall to increase the size of the Legal Information Center by 75%. The final product tripled the current inventory of classroom space, and provided a classroom seat for nearly the entire student body.

The law school's technological capabilities were enhanced thanks to a revamped Teleommunications plan, "smart" classrooms, and wired/wireless access throughout new and renovated spaces. The classroom spaces consist of one, 180-seat ceremonial classroom (for conferences, receptions, and special sessions), five, 75-seat lecture halls, six, 115-seat lecture halls, and five, 35-seat conference/ seminar rooms. Although the multimedia systems gain in complexity from the small rooms to the large ones, each classroom is standardized on its controls so that each system, no matter how complex, is nearly identical to operate. The entire facility is wired for complete wireless network coverage as well as for voice over IP telephone connectivity.

“These state-of-the-art facilities provide the space we need to accommodate our students with the most up-to-date technologies, including wireless laptops and ‘smart podia,’” said law Dean Robert Jerry. “The enhancement in our students’ educational experiences will be truly stunning.”

Along with the classroom towers, a new law library, the Lawton Chiles Legal Information Center, was added to the complex. The new library will help the University reach and surpass its peer institutions in the quantity and quality of its space in that the library will be the largest academic law library in the southeast and among the top 20 in terms of size of more than 180 such facilities in the United States.

“Our new classrooms are second to none,” said Associate Dean Patrick Shannon, law school project coordinator. “We owe a great deal to our architects…and the hundreds of workers who have built new teaching facilities that will be a showcase for the University.”
