Construction of the Coca-Cola Bottling Company's new facility began in May 2007. In May 2008, the company announced that it would expand the facility, increasing the total size of the new facility to 781,000 square feet, and making a total, local investment of approximately $178 million. Baton Rouge Coca-Cola Bottling Company expects the expansion to add up to 113 new jobs by 2012 with an average annual salary of $45,000. SCG provided structured cabling, intercom, audio-visual, and camera surveillance system design for the project. Governor Jindal said, "Baton Rouge Coca-Cola Bottling Company's expansion in Louisiana creates good-paying jobs, strengthens the local economy and improves the quality of life for the people of this community. In addition, this expansion today highlights the importance our continued work to reform the economic landscape in our state - through ethics reforms, tax cuts, and work force development reforms - all aimed at making Louisiana a new frontier of opportunity for business growth, success, and job creation." Through collaboration with The Coca-Cola Company, the Baton Rouge plant is now a regional production and distribution hub for the Coca-Cola system. The revised building design expanded local capability to include production of POWERADE and VitaminWater, through the addition of three thermal lines, for a total of six high-speed lines. Baton Rouge Coca-Cola Bottling Company is now supplying POWERADE and will soon supply VitaminWater to Coca-Cola bottlers throughout Louisiana and into neighboring states. "Baton Rouge is perfectly positioned to be a southeastern regional hub for the Coca-Cola system, and we are excited to play a key role in the expansion of our industry, as well as serve as a driver of economic growth in our community," said Chustz. "We have confidence in our business, and we are pleased to have this world-class facility open and operational in Baton Rouge and Louisiana. We looked at other sites, but Baton Rouge was the most appealing because of our history in this area and the economic partnership that we have with the city and state." In order to secure the expanded production agreement with The Coca-Cola Company, it was necessary to expand the project site's infrastructure. Louisiana Economic Development (LED) provided $1.4 million in performance-based assistance for two water wells and other site improvements through its Economic Development Award Program. Phase one of the facility was completed in 2008. The first thermal line is now operational, and the second and third thermal lines will begin operating in 2010 and 2012, respectively. The three additional lines will provide up to 113 new jobs over four years, bringing the total employee base to over 600 people. The new building was constructed with recycled materials wherever feasible and incorporates many energy conservation initiatives. In addition, the new operation contains an on-site reclamation center for paper, plastic, cardboard, aluminum and shrink wrap. The facility serves as the first Coca-Cola bottling plant, as well as the first manufacturing facility in the state of Louisiana, to receive LEED certification. President and CEO and Founding Chair of the U.S. Green Building Council Rick Fedrizzi applauded Coca-Cola for their efforts, saying "Baton Rouge Coca-Cola's LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership. While climate change is a global problem, resourceful companies like Coca-Cola are addressing it through local solutions." |
