Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, near Jacksonville, North Carolina, is home to the II Marine Expeditionary Force, 2nd Marine Division, three other major Marine commands, and a Naval hospital. Schmidt Consulting Group, Inc. provided Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Communications design services for this Design/Build project that provided Operations and Training Facilities for use by the U.S. Coast Guard Special Missions Training Center (SMTC) and the Marine Corp Engineering School (MCES) at Camp Lejeune. |

Facilities included a Headquarters Building (6,552
square feet); an Academic Instruction Facility (15,024 square feet); an
Armory and Weapons Cleaning Canopy (2,950 square feet); a POV parking
area; a Boat Maintenance and Supply Facility (18,200 square feet); a covered
boat storage shelter; and an indoor Aquatics Training Facility (19,035
square feet). The construction cost for this project was $20,063,343.00.
The Headquarters Facility contains CO, XO and support staff offices, as well as administrative and conference spaces. The facility also includes network and SCIF servers and support space. The Academic Instruction Building of this complex is a single story, building which consists of a dividable 120-person classroom, plus two 25-person classrooms. Facility types within the building include classroom, computer lab, library, instructors’ offices and workspaces, and student lounge. This building is LEED Certified. SCG designed the high efficiency lighting with daylight controls system, a high efficiency HVAC system, and performed commissioning on all of the systems. The Armory includes separate Coast Guard and Marine Corps Armory space with a covered outdoor weapons cleaning area. The Boat Maintenance and Supply Facility includes three drive-thru boat maintenance and repair bays with bridge cranes; adjacent parts and tool lockers/storage cages/rubber repair bay; classroom and maintenance training support offices; specialized Marine Corp and Coast Guard storage for PPE’s and PFD’s; male and female toilet/locker room/showers, and laundry facilities; and storage warehouse space (high density system). The Aquatics Training Facility provides space for training port security units for all branches of the U.S. military as well as agencies of the Department of Homeland Security, state, and local law-enforcement services and even foreign military organizations. When not scheduled for official training activities, the facility is open for recreational use by military and civilian personnel stationed at Camp Lejeune. The building includes a twenty-five meter, 6-lane pool with 3, 4, and 5 meter diving platforms with deck space for training instruction, support, and safety offices. The natatorium includes a state-of-the-art dehumidification system that maintains the deck environment as well as providing heat for the pool by using waste heat. Sustainable features include retractable, translucent roof panels and operable wall panels that allow the deck to be opened to the outdoors when the outside conditions allow. |
