NAS Whiting Field also provides training for U.S. Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Air Force student pilots, as well as those of several allied nations. It is also home to Training Air Wing FIVE. NAS Whiting Field is actually two airfields sharing a common support base. Schmidt Consulting group began its relationship with NAS Whiting Field in 1990. We have provided design services for a number of renovation/addition projects at Whiting, as well as for new construction. Our firm recently participated in a Design/Build projectwhich provided Whiting Field with a state-of-the-art Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) to facilitate Naval aviation training of pilots in both fixed and rotary wing aircraft at the site's South field. The new ATCT is a six-story facility with a control cab on the sixth floor. It includes an elevator, stair, mechanical room, training room, lounge, office restroom, and equipment rooms. The new ATCT replaced the existing tower located in Hangar 1406 and is adjacent to the existing hangar. An elevated conditioned walkway connects the new ATCT to Hangar 1406 at the second floor level. Modifications to Hangar 1406 were required to accomodate. Flight training was not disrupted during construction of the new facility. This project was phased to allow the previous ATCT to remain operational and fully functional until the new ATCT reached approximately 50 feet above grade. Schmidt Consulting Group, Inc. provided Structural, Plumbing, Mechanical, and Communications design services for the project. |
