| The purpose of the new $30 million Air and Space Operations Center (AOC) located at Tyndall Air Force Base is to plan, direct, and assess day-to-day air and space operations for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the United States Northern Command (NORTHCOM). The AOC’s mission is to provide a state-of-the-art facility which will enhance homeland security and help provide safer domestic skies. The facility will allow the Air Force to continue to conduct rescues, deliver medical supplies, and aid in forest firefighting, as well as humanitarian relief efforts after hurricanes and other natural disasters. |

The center will employ two air defense sectors, the Northeast Air Defense Sector and the Western Defense Sector, to watch all air traffic in the continental United States. The Florida National Guard’s 601st Air Operations Group will man and operate the center. Schmidt Consulting Group, Inc. provided Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Structural, and Communications research to be incorporated into the Request for Proposal for this Design/Build project. The AOC included such features as an $11 million weapons system and a $3.5 million 16-screen data wall. |
