The
NWFL College Branch Campus at South Walton is the seventh campus and/or
center for the college. The first phase of the project includes classroom
and lab buildings, an administration building, a corporate training center,
and a designated area for the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance. The Alliance
is an organization committed to protecting and preserving the natural
resources of the Choctawhatchee River and Bay, while encouraging sustainable
development.
The buildings are the first step in the construction of a new college
campus. The facilities intend to set a standard that all future buildings
will follow. Technology plays a key role in these first buildings and
will promote the use of computers and audio-visual technologies in all
aspects of education. The buildings will be designed for flexible growth
so that as the campus develops and programs change, the buildings are
able to keep up and adapt.
The program calls for a sensitivity to the creation of pedestrian-friendly
walkways and bicycle paths, and the preservation of the environment. A
plan was developed that is consistent with the ongoing desire to preserve
wetland areas, emphasize pedestrian access both to and from the site,
and create a dense and energy efficient complex of buildings that can
be easily phased and/or expanded.
While architectural influences are evident, and the new campus relates
well to its existing and planned environment and to the main campus, the
new campus style is distinctive in its own right. It articulates both
the character and mission of the college while eloquently expressing the
style of the community it serves.
Schmidt Consulting Group, Inc. provided Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing,
Fire Protection, Communications, and Structural design services for the
project. The cost of this phase of construction was $4.5 million.
